Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage: Students will view a short video clip of images of slavery set to a traditional slave hymnal.

2. Explore: In groups, students will analyze various primary source narratives from slaves about the living, working, and familial conditions on southern plantations.

3. Explain: Students will jigsaw with members of other groups to discuss their findings from the documents and gain additional information.

4. Extend/Expand: Students will participate in an OUT instructional strategy by analyzing textbook coverage of the slave experience in comparison to what is revealed through slave narratives.

5. Evaluate: Students will write a letter to the editor(s)/author(s) of their textbook critiquing or praising the textbook’s treatment of the slave experience and offering suggestions for future editions.
