Prisms and Pyramids

In this lesson, students will continue to consider the impact of their waste from the perspective of how much size (volume) it take up. Students will extend their exploration of 2-D objects and their properties to create a clear understanding of the volume by way of layering areas.

This lesson develops students’ ideas of polygons and polyhedra, or 2- and 3-D objects, respectively, with flat faces, through the lens of waste and waste management. Students work to further understand the magnitude of the trash produced in the Unites States of America by actually designing their own landfill. This takes into consideration the amounts of trash that enters the facility and basic design issues such as total land area, volume of each pile of trash, and roadways for dump trucks and bulldozers.
