Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage:  Students will discuss personal secrets and government secrets.  Students will create a chart on the pros and cons of government secrecy.                

2. Explore:  To understand context, students will use class notes or textbook to create a word web or list of events happening during the Watergate years/Nixon administration.

3. Explain:  Students will read a summary of major disclosures within the Pentagon Papers and rank them from least dangerous to most dangerous.

4. Extend/Expand:  Students will do a close read and source primary and secondary sources on the Pentagon Papers and complete chart as a small group comparing the sources.

5. Evaluate:  Individually or in small groups, students will create a written argument supporting or refuting Henry Kissinger’s 1971 statement:  “Daniel Ellsberg is the most dangerous man in America.”
