Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage: Read Counting on Frank by Rod Clement(1991) to the students. Students will make predictions based on the book. Ask “How long do you think it would take for your bathroom to fill with water?” and “How many cans of dog food will fit in one grocery bag?”

2. Explore: Students will work in small groups to investigate if the author’s statement about the number of cans that can fit in a grocery bag is correct.

3. Explain: Students will design posters to show their discoveries. Students will present their findings to the class.

4. Extend/Expand: Students will write to the author describing their procedures and their results.

5. Evaluate: Students will use different levels of understanding throughout the lesson. Students’ writing samples will demonstrate their understanding of this activity. Students’ discussions and presentations of findings will provide evidence of understanding.
