Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage:  Students will view a video of a rollercoaster and brainstorm names for rollercoasters parks.             

2. Explore:  Students will use a close reading strategy to analyze two informational texts, looking for main idea, details, and theme.                

3. Explain:  Students will discuss the essential question, how details support theme, and use an exit strategy to show application of theme to a novel they have read.                 

4. Extend/Expand:  Students will evaluate two poems using an analysis tool looking for theme and details to support the theme. 

5. Evaluate:  Students will make an argument based on whether it is better to be selfish or not using the two informational texts and two poems to support their argument.  Students will present their argument and support on a T chart for students and teacher to evaluate in a WalkAbout.
