Synopsis

Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage:  Students will discuss memorable characters in literature and film.                  

2. Explore:  Students will watch a short video about parenting, and then analyze an excerpt from one of three plays to examine the protagonist.     

3. Explain:  Students will define the concept of theme in literary works, then analyze several classic plays to determine their theme, citing evidence to support  the theme selection.               

4. Extend/Expand:  Students will bring an article to class that they select on the theme fathers to connect to the plays and the theme of acceptance.

5. Evaluate: Students will write a letter to a person of their choice (parent, future children, father figure, sibling …) about the impact a father’s acceptance or rejection has had,  supporting their writing by citing the play(s) and their article.
