Lesson Snapshot 

1. Engage:  Students will view a video on logical fallacies and discuss the relevance of truth in media.

2. Explore:  Students will card sort the pathos, ethos, and logos titles and definitions to introduce this type of rhetoric.

3. Explain:  Students will apply the reading strategy of “close reading” to two excerpts of Machiavelli’s “The Prince”.            

4. Extend/Expand:  Students will examine biographical sources on Machiavelli and a current news article for the persuasive means of pathos, ethos, and logos.                 

5. Evaluate:  Students will write an argument citing evidence as to whether Machiavelli’s beliefs on leadership are credible.
