Lesson Snapshot

1. Engage: Students will write a narrative about a fictitious “Sugar Famine.”

2. Explore: Students will analyze a population chart during the potato famine and then read “A Modest Proposal.”

3. Explain: Students will analyze the literature using an analytical reading tool to look for true meaning of connotative and figurative language.

 4. Extend/Expand: Students will use connotation and figurative language to explore a solution to a problem at school or in their town and write a satirical essay.

5. Evaluate: Students will be evaluated with the language/ satire rubric.
