1. Engage: Students will briefly respond in writing to the prompt “how responsible are you for your friend who is depressed/going through a hard time.” With the teacher’s assistance, students will connect their relationship with their depressed friend to the government’s response to the Great Depression.
2. Explore: Students will learn about key New Deal programs and (1) determine if they were examples of relief, recovery, or reform; (2) explain their reasoning; and (3) decide which groups of people were helped by each program.
3. Explain: Students will share their responses to the Explore activity. The teacher may make corrections and elaborate as needed.
4. Extend/Expand: Students will participate in a “Post-It Claims”/”Sticky Bars” activity where they determine which New Deal program was most important and defend their opinions.
5. Evaluate: Students will complete a few EOI-style assessment questions over what they have learned, and then complete a brief writing activity where they choose two New Deal programs that they believe were most important and explain why, citing evidence.
