The Role of the Government in the Economy
Our nation’s founders believed that economic freedoms as well as political freedom were essential for national prosperity and growth. They included numerous provisions in the Constitution that support and encourage the operation of a market economy or capitalism. Using the U.S. Constitution as the basic “law of the land,” and examples of newspaper headlines, students will identify and define the six characteristics of a market economy. Students will also review some fundamental economic terms as they apply to our changing global economy. Finally, students will analyze the changing role of the government in our economy from a “laissez-faire” theory to economic “bailout.”
