1. Engage: Students will participate in a 4-Corners class discussion in response to the following statement: “Creating an alliance for peace will prevent future wars.”
2. Explore: Students will analyze political cartoons to decipher arguments for and against the U.S. joining the League of Nations.
3. Explain: Students will jigsaw four speeches from politicians regarding U.S. membership in the League of Nations (Senator James D. Phelan and President Woodrow Wilson in support and Senators Lawrence Sherman and Henry Cabot Lodge against).
4. Extend/Expand: Students will vote if they personally believe that the U.S. should join the League and have an opportunity to share their rationale. To gain an international perspective, students will then read a speech from Polish Prime Minister in support of the League of Nations. They will have a chance to discuss if this changes their thinking at all.
5. Evaluate: Students will assume the role of a Senator and write a speech explaining why they support or disapprove of the League of Nations.
